St. Albans Sanatorium
Radford, Virginia

St. Albans was build in 1892 as a Lutheran school for boys. In 1916 it was converted to a hospital for the mentally insane. As with most psychiatric center at that time, St. Albans was really more of a torture chamber than a hospital.  Doctors would cut open patients’ skulls and shock them into a stupor with electroshock therapy. Insulin-induced comas and lobotomies left patients brain dead… or in some cases, actually dead.  It is a sad to think that patients who received brutal mistreatment at St. Alabans in life continue to remain trapped there after death.
