Roberts-Vaughan House
Murfreesboro, North Carolina
The Murfreesboro Historical Association owns the restored Roberts-Vaughan House. It is now home to the association's office and print archives, as well as the Murfreesboro Chamber of Commerce. A two-story, five bay, Federal-style frame dwelling with a gable roof it was built about 1805 by Benjamin Roberts. In 1835, the home became the property of Colonel Uriah Vaughan, a wealthy merchant. Colonel Vaughan enlarged the four-room house in 1850, and added its present Greek Revival features. The building was restored in the 1970s by the Murfreesboro Historical Association. The Roberts-Vaughn House opened to the public on June 3, 1972. It was the location of the Murfreesboro Public Library until the 1990s. Past MHA volunteers, employees, and the former librarian have heard strange sounds when no one else in the building, and people in historical clothing have been seen darting by open doorways. Will we capture any of this data? We’re excited to see for ourselves.
