Haunted Mordecai

Get ready for an immersive experience on Saturday, October 26th! Join The Ghost Guild in celebrating its 8th year as Mordecai Historic Park’s paranormal research team, and share in their excitement as they experiment with a new format for the annual Haunted Mordecai presentation.

This year, the Guild will guide small groups through the park buildings, starting with a brief introduction in the visitor center classroom. Then, onto the very locations where their data was collected, including Andrew Johnson's Birthplace, St. Mark's Chapel, and the Mordecai House. Within these historic spaces, you'll hear stories, personal experiences, and findings from their investigations, allowing you to visualize these elements in their authentic settings.

Groups are limited to 20 participants and will depart from the classroom every 30 minutes, starting at 10:30 AM, with the final group leaving at 3 PM.

Free tickets are available in two ways: half in advance through Eventbrite, and the other half on a first-come, first-served basis at the Mordecai Visitor Center on the day of the event.

We will take a shot at explaining why your house might be haunted and guzzle some 19th century spirit, photography that is. In partnership with the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, "Of Spirits and Art: A Curatorial Conversation with The Ghost Guild." has us delve deeper into the realm of spiritualism and spirit photography.
 
In the spirit of this conversation, stop by the free exhibit for a personal experience of your own. The exhibit features a photo by the first commercial spirit photographer, William Mumler, as well as a stereoscope image that might be connected to or inspired by Sir David Brewster's "Ghost in the Stereoscope" series.

We are thrilled to be making an in-person return with our annual Haunted Mordecai presentations. Make your way to the classroom at 12 PM, 1 PM, or 2 PM, where we will unveil the latest findings from our investigations within the park.

Join us for the Pumpkin Picnic festival at Mordecai Historic Park for some fall fun!
From pumpkins and costume contests to inflatable slides and carnival games, enjoy a free Halloween-filled afternoon with experiences for the whole family - even your pets! Enter the costume contests at 2 p.m. for kids and 2:45 p.m. for pets to win a fall prize basket. At the Visitor Center, stop by the classroom to meet members of The Ghost Guild!

Activities will include:
- Kids costume contest (up to age 16) at 2 p.m.
- Pet costume contest at 2:45 p.m.

To kick off the event, The Ghost Guild will host a fun and interactive open mic discussion… Find out what it's really like to investigate the unexplained. Dive into Raleigh’s ghost stories and the history behind them. Ask them questions about their experiences investigating locations in Raleigh and throughout the State. There will also be an opportunity for you to make your own slime and to take a picture with Slimer from the original Ghostbusters movie!

Interest in the supernatural isn’t a recent phenomenon. We can chart its trajectory from the very beginnings of human existence. While we’d love to cover thousands of years worth of history, that presentation would have a much longer run-time. Instead, we’re focusing on the late 19th century. How did investigators of their day compare with our own today?

Methodologies have understandably changed under the constant flow of technological innovations. However, there are interesting overlaps that have carried over from the past. In this discussion, we’ll talk about the the various ways that our predecessors tried to understand the paranormal. We’ll then bring it up to the present day, elaborating on how groups like The Ghost Guild and the National Society of Paranormal Investigation and Research (NSPIR) conduct their own investigations.

As autumn approaches, we find ourselves doing more and more of what we love – sharing ghost stories. For this presentation Al and Christina got to do just that. The Rotary Club of West Raleigh graciously extended an invitation to present at their NC State University Club luncheon. It was a fantastic experience. Not only did we speak about things we’re so passionate about, but we got to meet genuine Rotarians equally passionate about their cause. As though that wasn’t enough, in a goodwill gesture, the club will be purchasing a book in our honor and placing it in a local school library.

Are Ghost's Real? - 2022

We enjoyed diving into both explanations of events with psychology and physical science and dipping a toe into the philosophy of the paranormal. We love sharing what we know with groups and we hope to continue to help people think about their experiences and feel comfortable debating them in the future.
