Carolina Theatre, Durham, NC

If walls could talk, the Carolina Theatre would have a century of stories to tell—and perhaps a few spirits whispering them…

As the Carolina Theatre enters its centennial year, The Ghost Guild is proud to enter an exclusive partnership to explore the mysteries, legends, and unexplained experiences connected to this iconic Durham landmark. This moment invites reflection not only on the theater’s profound cultural impact, but also on the stories—both documented and whispered—that have lingered behind the curtain for generations.

Located in the heart of downtown Durham, the Carolina Theatre first opened on February 2, 1926, originally known as the Durham Auditorium. Designed in elegant Beaux-Arts style, the theater has stood as a cultural cornerstone for a full century, evolving from a vaudeville stage into a beloved movie palace and community gathering place.

The building also played a powerful role in history; in the early 1960s, it became a focal point in the fight for desegregation during the “Round Robin” protests, a legacy that remains a vital part of the theater’s identity today.

But some allege that history isn’t the only thing that lingers within these walls…

Over the years, staff, performers, and visitors have quietly shared accounts of unexplained sounds, sudden changes in temperature, and the unsettling sensation of someone walking past when no one is there. Whether these moments are echoes of the past or something more elusive, they have become part of the Carolina’s enduring lore.

As we honor this milestone, The Ghost Guild looks forward to listening closely, documenting experiences, and uncovering the mysteries that remain part of this treasured landmark.

Now it’s your turn.
Have you worked at, performed in, or visited the Carolina Theatre and experienced something unusual? We’d love to hear your story. Help us document the theatre’s "unwritten" history by completing our brief survey.
